Edward Loxton Knight, RBA, RI (1905-1993)

Loxton Knight was born in Long Eaton, Derbyshire and showed early promise as an artist, he was encouraged by the headmaster of his school in Long Eaton (Samuel Clegg, the grandfather of David and Richard Attenborough) to study art.  He went on to study at the Nottingham School of Art from 1924-29.  He is best known for his beautifully observed colour woodcuts, but he worked skilfully in many different mediums.

He was elected a member of the Colour Gravure Society, the Royal Society of British Artists, the Pastel Society and the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours.  He had several solo exhibitions, including at the Brook Street Gallery,  London,  the Chapel Bar Gallery in  Nottingham and the Carl Fischer Gallery, New York.

While a student he studied Japanese art and learned the Japanese method of printing which had a profound influence on all his art, seen in the translucence of his colour, his fluidity of line and repeated use of simple silhouetted dark shapes (often trees) against a lighter background.
