Annie Ovenden is a contemporary British artist, born in 1945. She worked as a graphic designer and artist in London before moving to Cornwall in 1973. In 1975 she, along with her husband Graham Ovenden, Sir Peter Blake and several others, joined a group of artists known as ‘The Brotherhood of Ruralists’. In 1978 Peter Blake explained
‘Simply our aims are the continuation of a certain kind of English painting; we admire Samuel Palmer, Stanley Spencer, Thomas Hardy, Elgar, cricket, English landscape, the Pre-Raphaelites etc ... Our aims are to paint about love, beauty, joy, sentiment and magic. We still believe in painting with oil paint on canvas, putting the picture into a frame and, hopefully, that someone will like it, buy it and hang it on their wall to enjoy it.
This delicate still life painting by Ovenden from 1998 shows the influence of the Pre-Raphaelites in its pure colours and intricate details.
Ovenden has exhibited widely, is a member of the St Ives Society of Artists, and she has had several solo exhibitions at the Catto Gallery in London.
