Aubrey Phillips studied at Kidderminster School of Art where he was taught by Cyril Lavenstein, renowned in the field of watercolour and pastel painting in which Phillips mainly specialised throughout his career. In 1966 he was awarded a Gold Medal at the Paris Salon, and a solo exhibition of his work was shown at the National Library of Wales. He lectured at Malvern Hills College and Bourneville School of Art and published eight books including 'Atmospheric Landscapes in Watercolour' (1990), and 'Painting with Pastels' (1993). Although he is mainly known for his watercolour and pastel landscapes and seascapes, he also used oil paint to great effect, as seen in this sketch, and retains his lightness of touch and ability to capture the fleeting effects of the British weather.
