This coastal scene is unsigned but is more than likely the work of an artist associated with the Scottish Colourists. The Scottish Colourists were highly influenced by French artists such as Matisse, Cézanne and the Fauves, in the first half of the 1900s, and their paintings are characterised by use of strong vivid colours and a loose technique. Their landscapes were often painted en plein air and capture fleeting effects of light and shade. They were not popular during their lifetime but in recent years they have become highly regarded and desirable.
